Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I am an equine sport science graduate. Whilst at university I worked in a riding a school, completing all usual yard duties and teaching the general public. Upon graduating, I was employed at a riding school and showjumping venue. In addition to teaching and yard work, I was also required to assist on competition days. I then went on to work as a sales assistant at an equine supplies store. I was able to use my degree to offer advice on feed, supplements and horse care. My next job was as head groom on an eventing stud and competition yard. Here I had sole charge of 11 eventing horses, ranging from new born foals to 5* event horses. I exercised all of the horses in work, carried out all daily duties, liaised with all visitors to the yard. Arranging vet, physio, farrier etc. I then was offered the opportunity to become the manager of the equine supply store I had previously been employed with. This gave me valuable experience managing a team, taking on more responsibility and gaining value knowledge of requirements for horses in all disciplines. Since then I have worked in flat racing in Australia and the UK. In my current role I am responsible for a team of 4, caring for 36 racehorses. I am solely responsible for all aspects of running the yard, I am also responsible for transporting the horses to the races, turning out to an extremely high standard, all aspects of racehorse riding/training from breaking and pre training the work riding.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
Sole charge, working as a team, clipping, plaiting, quarter marks, turning out to a high standard, equine first aid, decision making, handling young difficult horses, riding young difficult horses, level headed, strong work ethic, lunging, ground work, confident rider.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
I love working with animals who offer us so much and ask for very little in return. Just being around horses and caring for each individual horse to the best of my ability.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I have worked with racehorses for a long time and would love to gain more experience in how horses are trained to a high level in other disciplines.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I am extremely hard working, I have fantastic attention to detail and care for every horse is if it were my own. I can fit into any workplace as I am happy to work on my own but also fit in very well with other staff members. I will go above and beyond to ensure I carry out every job to the highest possible standard.
