Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I currently work on sales yard where I handle a wide range of horses from breakers, to top competition horses as well as dealing with clients, owners and vets. I have worked at my current yard for 2 years, at times being the only full time member of staff so have had to learn to work with lots of different people and adapt to the ways we have to deal with the yard duties depending on staff. I have learned a wide range of skills since being there, especially expanding my knowledge of horse first aid as well as improving my riding from having such a range of horses.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
I clip all the horses we have in and out on sales at my current job as well as turning them out to a high standard for their advert pictures, clients, vettings and shows. I am confident handling a wide range of horses as we have such a variety in, from unhandled youngsters, to top level competition horses, to dealing with a stallion whilst having mares on the yard. I really enjoy keeping everything tidy and organised and like to try and find time in my week to make sure everything is as it should be on the yard so it is smart for when we have clients etc.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
I find earning a horses trust so rewarding, having them slowly let their guard down and become more comfortable around you, once a horse trusts you they will do pretty much anything for you. Working with horses is hard work but it’s also so rewarding as if you put the work in you will nearly always see improvements or changes in the horse and their behaviour.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
No one is perfect, I always am keen to learn more in every aspect of the equine industry, but I would love to improve my plaiting skills. I have evented before but I now mostly showjump so haven’t been plaiting properly for a while, I would love to get them really neat and tidy,
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I work really hard and care about the horses more than anything else, they are my passion and I genuinely love what I do. I always am happy to stay a bit late to make sure the job is done properly, rather than rush to get home.
