Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
We have horses at home and I have ridden since I was 11. I started working with racehorses when I left school at 16, with a 12-week training course at the British Racing School in Newmarket. I worked as a work rider for Hughie Morrison Racing where I got my Apprentice Licence from the Jockey Club in March 2005 and my NVQ Level 2 in Racehorse Care in August 2005. I had some success as a jockey and won a few races but I got too heavy (I needed to be less than 8 stone). I worked as a work rider in various racing yards 2006-2011. I worked part-time achooling and bringing on young horses 2012-2015. I worked as trek leader for the Glenshiel Highland Pony Trekking Centre for the summer 2025 , responsible for looking after the ponies, organising and leading short and long treks, ensuring customer safety and taking payments when necessary. I loved every minute of it.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
I like working in a team but I am happy to work alone. I am a confident and experienced rider. I can do all the usual work required to look after horses (grooming, feeding, mucking out, poo-picking etc.) I enjoy interacting with customers/clients. I am a patient teacher and enjoy helping people to learn to ride. I have two current First Aid Certificates and have had training in Safeguarding Children.
I also non-equine skills. I worked as a builder’s labourer for several years and also for a landscape gardening company. My parents own a smallholding and I have worked with their cattle and sheep and looked after their dogs. I have just completed training as a snowboard instructor so I have learned a ,lot about how to deliver effective practical training.
