Experience with Horses

Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.

My experience with horses starts from a young age, I have been around horses since about the age of eight and have always loved them. Due to my fathers pervious job i had the opportunity to travel the world including places such as India, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Dubai and Brasil. Through traveling I have learnt to adapt both my skills and knowledge with how horses are treated and used in these different countries. Within my time in South Africa is where I found my love and passion for competing, I begun competing for age 12 in classes of dressage, show jumping, and working hunter. I never really had a horse of my own at this time so I would ride many different types of horses and ponies this helped to first develop my confidence with different horses as well as making me a better all around rider.

From there we moved onto Brasil I continued to progress in my riding and competing and begun competing more with show jumping at 90cm/1m. Most recently I have moved back to the UK to pursue a career with horses and am currently studying Equine Management Level 3 Diploma at Easton College. Here I have been taught the BHS side of things as well as perfecting my skills such as plaiting and clipping, and developing my knowledge of horses on a more biological spectrum. Easton College to take my BHS Stage one (ride and care) which I have noe completed and passed I am now looking to take my BHS Stage two. College has also allowed me the ability to make connections within the equine community and industry closer to home, and given me the confidence to try different areas and aspects of equine jobs.

Last year through college I had the amazing opportunity to work alongside Bryan Elliot at the Royal Norfolk Show aiding him with the stabling side of things, there I learnt how the stables were laid out and structured and how he managed everyone coming in and out. I leant how to stay patience and calm when dealing with problems and how to think on my feet quickly. Other horsey experiences I have are wokring at a busy livery yard, Great Oaks Equestrian. Here I helped with mucking out, turning out/ bringing in, and overall care and attention to these horses this role taught me how to manage my time and be efficient and effective with the time I had. One more job role I have had is working at a saddlery, Marsham Saddlery. I found this role very interesting as it allowed me into a whole different area I didn’t know much about, it opened my eyes to areas such as feed, bedding, tack and equpiment and how they’re used properly, why there used, how they should be feed. Overall it has been a very interesting job and I very much enjoyed it.

Overall, I am a confident, friendly individual who has experience with dealing with different types of horses and ponies both ridden and on the ground. I am looking for a equine related job that requires me to be out a lot and doing the thing I love most, i love to be practical and hands on and feel it better helps me to understand and expand more.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

Developing a relationship with each horse and watching their development over time is what I most enjoy. Gaining a horse’s trust and assisting them in becoming more confident, balanced, and understanding in their work is immensely fulfilling to me. I also like the routine and responsibilities that come with being in a yard since I know that a horse’s performance and well-being are directly impacted by regular care, patience, and attention to detail.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

I want to keep growing in self-assurance and my ability to mentor and assist people. I would like to get more experience formally guiding less experienced riders and helping them develop confidence and proper technique, even though I am at ease aiding and passing on information. I like to support others and provide clear explanations, and I’m eager to perfect these skills so that I can eventually contribute more to a team atmosphere.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

I provide a strong work ethic, dependability, and a genuine enthusiasm for the welfare of horses. I think my consistency, patience, and composure around horses are crucial for a work rider position. Taking care of my own horse has improved my awareness of routine, paying close attention to details, and upholding high standards of presentation and care.

I work hard, am flexible, and am prepared to go above and beyond, whether it’s staying late to finish a task or helping the larger team. I’m determined to grow, learn, and make a constructive contribution to my surrounding environment.
