Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
Horses have been an important part of my life from a young age. Since the age of ten, I have worked as a groom and rider for other people, gaining practical experience with a wide range of horses. I am currently working in the UK as a groom, where my responsibilities include caring for injured horses, daily stable management, riding and exercising horses, assisting with breaking in young horses, and helping with the care and handling of foals. Through this work I have developed strong horse-handling skills, a good understanding of equine behaviour, and the ability to recognise subtle health or behavioural changes. I am confident working independently, prioritising horse welfare, and maintaining high standards of care.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
Animal Care & Handling
Confident animal handling – experienced with dogs, horses, young animals, and anxious or traumatised animals.
Observation of health and behaviour – noticing subtle changes in condition, behaviour, appetite, or movement.
Animal welfare awareness – prioritising safety, calm handling, and good daily care.
Supporting injured or recovering animals – experience caring for injured horses and animals in rescue environments.
Equine Skills
Horse care and stable management – feeding, mucking out, grooming, rugging, and general yard duties.
Riding and exercising horses – maintaining fitness and behaviour of different horses.
Breaking in young horses – assisting with training and handling young or inexperienced horses.
Practical & Work Ethic Skills
Responsibility and reliability – caring for animals that depend on consistent daily routines.
Physical stamina – able to work in physically demanding environments.
Working independently and in teams – managing tasks while supporting colleagues.
Attention to detail – important for monitoring animal health and safety.
Behaviour & Training Skills
Positive reinforcement training (dogs and young animals).
Calm handling of nervous or reactive animals.
Patience and consistency in training and care.
Interpersonal Skills (from Social Work)
Communication with owners/clients.
Empathy and compassion.
Remaining calm under pressure.
Professionalism in emotionally difficult situations.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
The difference in character and feeling they give you when you ride or handle them.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
My knowdledge and riding skills.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I believe I stand out because I already have a lot of hands-on experience with animals in different environments. I’ve worked with rescue dogs, cared for injured horses, and assisted with young horses and foals. Combined with my background in social work, I’m comfortable working with both animals and people. I’m also very motivated to build a long-term career in veterinary nursing and would be fully committed to learning and developing within the practice.
