Experience with Horses

Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.

I currently work as a groom at a livery yard where i have worked for the past 10 years. I am responsible for the daily care and management of a variety of horses. My duties include mucking out, turning out/bringing in, feeding, tack cleaning, and general yard maintenance to a high standard.

I have experience handling a range of horses with different temperaments, including young and more sensitive horses, Eventers, show jumpers, heavy breeds, native breeds, dressage horses and ex racehorses and I am confident working both independently and as part of a team. I have ridden as part of my role and in my own time on my own ex racehorse.

My work has given me strong awareness of horse behaviour, safety, and risk management, as well as the physical fitness and resilience required for demanding yard environments. I am particularly interested in continuing to build my riding ability across different types of horses and situations, with the long-term aim of progressing into stunt riding and performance work.

Outside of employment, I grew up riding on a hill country farm in New Zealand helping my dad with stock management. From the age of 2 – 10 I attended pony club regularly as well as riding competitively, from the age of 10 to present day I have ridden horses competitively in Dressage, show jumping and eventing and am currently re training my ex racehorse. I have also dabbled in disciplines such as, liberty training, working equitation, Western, and have just begun stunt riding lessons with the Knights on Middle England.

Key Skills

What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc

  • Confident handling of a variety of horses and temperaments
  • Strong understanding of horse behaviour and safety
  • Physically fit and capable of working long, demanding hours
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Reliable, punctual, and consistent in maintaining high standards
  • Experience with general yard duties including mucking out, feeding, turnout, and tack care
  • Calm under pressure and able to think quickly in unpredictable situations
  • Willingness to learn and take direction

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

I most enjoy the partnership you build with horses and the constant learning that comes with working with different personalities. I find it very rewarding gaining a horse’s trust and improving through consistent, hands-on work. I also enjoy the physical and practical nature of the job, and being outdoors in a fast-paced environment.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

I would like to continue developing my riding skills, particularly in more technical and demanding situations, and to gain more experience riding a wider variety of horses. I’m also keen to build skills that would support performance-based work, such as adaptability, precision, and confidence in unfamiliar environments.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

I am hardworking, reliable, and genuinely committed to improving my skills. I bring a strong work ethic from my current role and a willingness to take on physically demanding work without complaint. I am calm, safety-conscious, and capable of handling responsibility, while also being open to learning and feedback.

What sets me apart is my long-term goal of progressing into stunt riding, which drives me to continuously improve my riding, fitness, and adaptability. I am motivated, focused, and determined to make the most of every opportunity.
