Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I have been riding from the age of 5 and I am an experienced rider. I have previously loaned a horse, and I am great and familiar with all yard duties and caring for horses. I previously volunteered at a charity farm where I focused in working with horses for two years. Here, I was involved in all of the day -day yard routine, assisting in children and adult riding lessons. I also participated in a lot of charity events, where I primarily worked with children as I would carry tasks out such as leading children on the pony, and teaching them how to ride.
Hillend Dressage Stud – Gloucestershire
I had undertaken a very exciting job opportunity by working at a prestigious dressage stud based in Gloucestershire. I was able to be involved in the daily running of this prestigious yard. The working pattern had started very early and ended late however it had been very rewarding. I was able to handle and help take care of top performance horses that compete at Grand – Pre level at Dressage, all of which required high care, training and nutrition regimes. I was even more fortunate enough to have one to one coaching with the owner of the Stud, who is also a competitive dressage rider by learning how to handle different horses in the yard. I was able to demonstrate and learn through being taught in the main Prestigious arena. This was a very valuable experience, where I had developed my skills of awareness, and discipline.
Assisting the staff in the running of rehabilitation therapy for horses –
Hartpury College During my work experience I had the opportunity to work at the biggest equine college in the
world. During my time I had worked at the equine therapy center. When I had arrived, I was
able learn about why each horse had been stabled here, and i had also learned about their
medical needs too. A lot of the horses there had been high end competition horses, and a
typical example of one of the horses there had been to increase their muscularity down below
in their legs to enable them to compete efficiently. For this type of condition I would help assist
in leading the horse to the water therapy department where I would hold the horse in the
water bath, whilst they would be walking through water in the bath at a slow pace. However,
Before this I would need to weigh the horse on a scale. I would need to carry this out before to
see how much they weigh before they had exercised, and after they had exercised to see the
difference in their weight loss. During my time here, I had carried out the general yard duties
such as mucking out and sweeping the yard. This had been a major part of the work being done
on the yard, and needed to be done very often. I had learnt a lot of skills during my time here
such as how to wrap a tail bandage on the horses tail, how to get them ready with the suitable
equipment before entering the therapy suite, but also the names of the different types of
equipment too. The most enjoyable experience overall had been when I had gotten the
opportunity to have a go in the rider performance center where there were the most
technologically advanced rider simulators in the world. I had gotten to ride a horse simulator
called Margret which I show jumped and had ridden a racehorse simulator too. This had been
beneficial as I had gotten to learn crucial techniques that I can apply to my own riding skills out
of school.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
I am great and I love all yard duties and caring for horses whether that is mucking out, taking up, grooming etc. I enjoy riding horses of all sizes, and helping to teach in riding lessons. I am very independent and can get on with tasks quickly but efficiently. I am also a quick learner.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses? The nature of the work generally I find enjoyable as there is always something to do, and it keeps you busy.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker? Above all, it is my motivation and determination to keep going and persevering in my daily tasks. This stems from my ambition to become an equine vet in the future. Similarly, I have an abundance of experience most of which I have organised and arranged for myself.
