This leading, medium-sized thoroughbred stud has mares that have produced nearly 200 foals, which, between them, have won over £20 million in prize money! Specialising in sales, boarding, and youngstock preparation, we are currently looking for a stud hand who will fit right in with their great young team who are constantly growing and developing their skills and experiences under expert leadership. Job description/responsibilities :
Must be a team player and happy to contribute to all aspects of the job. Reporting to the Stud Manager and the assistant Stud Manager Stud you will assist in the day-to-day running of the stud and care of the mares, foals and yearlings.
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Horse Handling and Care:
Stud hands will work hands on with the horses in delivering care and treatment where needed. Feeding, grooming and assisting in medical treatments. Handling and teaching of young stock as well as Sales prep for leading mare, foal and yearling sales. Examine and monitor horses for signs of illness, disease or injury.
- Stud upkeep:
Stud hands will regularly clean and maintain the stud and associated grounds in tasks such as mucking out, pressure washing, painting, blowing, raking, strimming etc. Cleaning and disinfecting is an important part of our biosecurity and all staff members must follow instruction and rules on isolation and contamination.
- Assisting industry professionals:
The Stud Hand will assist a wide variety of professionals in caring for the horses. Professionals such as, Vets, Farriers, Nutritionists, Equine Physios, Bloodstock Agents etc.
- Machinery & Equipment:
Stud hands will use machinery provided such as tractors and tipping trailers, John Deere Gators, Strimmers, Blowers, and steam cleaners. Training and safety equipment are provided.
The nature of the thoroughbred industry and a stud farm means that some work will be done outside of conventional hours. Loading and unloading of horses, assisting in foaling, assisting in emergencies such as loose or injured horses, travelling to covers etc. As much notice as is possible will be given and in some cases is renumerated with time off in lieu or payment in the case of covering sitting up.
Every 2nd weekend off and day off during week (day depending in season or out but still every 2nd weekend off). Rota done a month in advance. Fairly distributed amongst team.
