Experience with Horses

I have worked with horses for 10 + years as well as owning my own horses for 8 years.
I first started out with horses helping a family friend, Anna,  with her carriage driving ponies who also broke horses in to ride and drive, including one of my own horses, Frankie. I back stepped at competitions as well as some occasions such as weddings and fun rides.
While helping Anna, I completed my NC Animal care course in 2019, then I moved to Penrith to work for George Bowman and his father, grooming for their 4 in-hand driving team. As well as back stepping and grooming for competitions and events, I carried out the daily general yard duties, groomed the horses for exercise and schooled and exercised the horses between driving days.
I moved back home in 2020 after purchasing my 2nd horse, Harvey, my OTTB who I have been bringing on, and worked in retail while taking more time to work with my own horses. I returned to college in 2021 studying NC horse care, progressing onto AC horse care, then finally studying HNC horse care.
Throughout all courses, although the subjects remained the same, with each year we looked more in depth into each subject, which included nutrition, fitness (practical and theory) , equine health, anatomy and physiology and we also participated in 2 weeks of work experience in AC and HND in which I spent mine in Preston at a stud yard, Country Farm stud.
I then bought my 3rd horse in 2023, Ozz, a 6 month old cob colt, with the hope to start my own stud business in the future.
I have competed in many carriage driving competitions, show jumping competitions between 60-90 cm and some in-hand shows.
I also participate in common ridings that take place across Dumfries and Galloway for gala and ‘guid neichbors’ in the summer months.

I am an organised, independent worker with strong time management skills, being detail-oriented I complete jobs given to a high level and find that I can learn new tasks quickly. I work well as part of a team or independently with determination to complete and prioritise tasks, ensuring these are finished to a high standard and within the given timeline. I am capable of the following; Clipping, pulling and trimming Preparing horses for competition Bandaging (travel, stable and injury) Riding (schooling and hacking) Lungeing (using equipment such as equi-ami and bungees) Long rein Carriage driving Handling breeding and youngstock First aid  Pasture management

 

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

I get great satisfaction when working and caring for horses as it is rewarding knowing that I have given them the essential care required for a happy and healthy life. I also find them therapeutic to work to and enjoy learning more about each individual horse the more I work with them.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

I would like to improve and gain knowledge on different disciplines.

I am devoted and motivated to working within the equine sector with 10 + years’ experience of working with and caring for horses. I am open and confident to trying new experiences and gaining new skills within different disciplines. I prioritise the horses health and welfare above all and I am committed to giving the the essential care that they need and deserve.

• What would you like to do or gain in your next job?

I would like the opportunity to have more hands on experience with horses of different disciplines and learn the skills and techniques when riding required to participate in the sport.
