Experience with Horses

Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.

I have been riding since I was about 5 years old. Though I am an intermediate rider rather than an advanced rider: walking, trotting, cantering and some galloping but I especially love going on hacks.

I have been riding on most of our holidays such as  in  Ireland, Germany, Iceland, UK, Spain, Portugal, Italy. In these cases I had the chance to learn about the different horse breeds and character such as the toelt in Iceland.

My experience working in horse care and stable maintenance (mucking out, grooming, feeding, giving medication, lunging) comes from volunteering in three separate stables in Germany and one in England, and from regularly helping neighbours in the UK with care for their three horses including sole responsibility during their absence.

Two of the stables in Germany (Reittherapie Zentrum Wannsee, (RTZ),  Berlin, and Hof am Lindberg, Brandenburg) focused on helping children with disabilities through their contact with the horses, and this awoke my own interest in this area. In the UK I have volunteered at RDA stables in Cheltenham and at Burcott, Somerset.

Key Skills

What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc

Having the sole responsibility with looking after small groups of horses. I am also very clear about when to seek further advice if I am unsure.

Working in a team (e.g at RTZ). RDA work requires close team cooperation.

Leading the horses singly or in groups to and from their fields. Grooming and putting on tack.

I have a good understanding of when a horse is starting to get nervous.

Cleaning and other stable maintenance: I am very aware that a clean and tidy stables is important for hygiene and safety.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

They have a strong calming and therapeutic effect on me. I enjoy helping others to have the same experience. For this, working with horse is as important to me as riding them. I also love and respect horses as animals.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

My confidence when riding. I have a lot of experience caring for horses, but their are always new things to learn.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

My previous experience in horse care, responsibility, reliability and willingness to work hard in all kinds of weather conditions.
