Experience with Horses

Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work. Ridden and owned horses lifelong- hunted with Worcestershire and Kimblewick. Did Riding Club competitions and entry- level affiliated eventing- BE90. Meanwhile pursued a career as a medical doctor! Gave that up and lived in Norway for four years running a guest house, then returned in March 2022 and worked with horses since- including six months at a livery yard in Ascot on the edge of Windsor Park so had the privilege of riding in the park, and 12 months working at a large NH racing yard in a mixed groom/exercise rider/ admin/ hospitality role. Currently working as sole charge groom on a family yard with hunters/ retired eventers.

Key Skills

What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc- currently sole charge but no problems working with others and used to working with a very wide range of people when I was an ER doctor and also worked as the doctor at BE eventing and at racecourses. Can host guests from all social backgrounds with confidence. Can solve problems and have a wide range of skills from first aid to basic DIY. Happy to help with admin/marketing/social media. Understand the worlds of hunting and eventing. Can tow a trailer and drive a lorry up to 7.5t. Happy to hack out alone or with others and ride routine exercise regimes- always hacked my own horses every day and mostly alone.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses? Being outdoors, the mix of practical and mental skills, the variety of activities involved, getting to know and understand the horses as individuals and developing working relationships with them.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve? Riding skills- also would like to learn more about schooling techniques like long reining.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker? Hard working and reliable. Good in a crisis and at multi tasking. Able to take on a mixed role that might involve admin/office work or being a bit of an “all rounder” and helping with dogs, children, housekeeping, other animal care, gardening etc. “Life skills” and experience that enable me to establish a rapport with people from a very wide range of backgrounds.

Requirements

• What would you like to do or gain in your next job? Would like to ride more and maybe have the chance to hunt or compete. Would also like to do BHS exams.

• Do you need accommodation? Yes

• Do you have any special requirements for any animals you wish to bring with you? Need to be able to bring one small dog- Jack Russell female- good with people, children and other dogs.

• Do you have any ongoing commitments? No

• Do you have any holidays booked that an employer needs to know of? Have booked a holiday in July – need to be in Copenhagen Friday 5th July as have a concert ticket – planned to travel for the week but could be shortened to a long weekend.
