Experience with Horses

Witheford Equine (June 2017 – January 2018)
Rider and Groom
My job here was to ride and look after young horses and horses with behaviour issues. I feel I developed as a person here and learnt how to be more confident within myself; talking to owners and trainers. I was given a lot of responsibility within this role; administrating medication, bandaging and treating injuries and being in charge while the manager was away.

Hugo Palmer Racing (April 2016 – June 2017)
Work Rider and Groom
In this industry I faced long hours and hard, physical work as a work rider; exercising and preparing horses for the race course. I was allocated 4 horses to muck out, groom, hay, and water and feed in the morning and in the evening before I was given the responsibility of overseeing a barn of horses. This meant I would check that the staff were caring for the horses they were allocated for properly. I would also make up the correct feeds for the horses, administer medication and treat any injuries.

Luca Cumani Racing (June 2015 – April 2016)
Work Rider and Groom
In this job I was allocated 3 horses to care for. This included mucking out, feeding, hay and water. I would also groom these horses of an evening. I would exercise 3 horses on the gallops of a morning too.

Charles Hills Racing (March 2014 – June 2015)
Work Rider and Groom
Charles Hills Racing was my first job in the horse racing industry. My responsibilities here included 5 horses allocated to me to muck out, hay, water and feed morning and afternoon. I would also exercise 5 horses in the morning, these horses varied and I gained a lot of experience with different types of horses. In the afternoons I also had jobs such as sweeping the walker, tidying the yard and cleaning tack. At feed time I was responsible for giving the right horses the right medication and supplements.

Clairemont Stud (July 2013 – January 2014)
Stud Hand
I first got this job as a holiday job which made me realise I wanted a career with horses. This role included in the care of thoroughbred foals, broodmares and yearlings. I would muck out, turn out the horses into paddocks and tidy the yard in the mornings. In the afternoons I would bring in the horses from the paddocks. I would feed the horses that lived out morning and evening, checking that they were all fit and healthy in the process. I prepped yearlings for the sales; this included hand walking and lunging them daily to get them used to being walked in hand. I also attended the sales to assist in the showing.

Horseology (Saturday job while I was at school)
Saturday/Holiday assistant
Horseology is a riding school for the disabled. Here I helped with the teaching of students and the general caring of the horses. I gained experience in helping and teaching children and adults with varying degrees of disability.
