Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I have been around horses since I was very young, riding and having loan ponies. When I was 15/16 I started working ad-hoc on weekends, and during holidays at our local livery yard, Taylor Made Liveries, which involved turning out and bringing horses in from the field, mucking out, feeding, dealing with vet and farrier visits, ensuring that horses are healthy and reporting any concerns to the Head Girl/Yard Manager. Around six years ago, I got involved with the rehabilitation of an ex-racehorse. This process has taught me a lot about the importance of the rehabilitation process after a major surgery, such as kissing spines. I have some experience dealing with foals/yearlings, as I have been poo-picking the field of two yearlings on and off for the past two years. I regularly lunge and hack my current yard owners’ horses and ponies.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
I am good at working in a team, which I demonstrated whilst working at Taylor Made Liveries and Sweet Marie’s Party Shop, but I am also capable of working on my own, which I have demonstrated when managing the shop whilst my manager was on leave. I have good communication skills, which were important at Sweet Marie’s to ensure high customer satisfaction and at Taylor Made Liveries to ensure that all horses and ponies were receiving the best possible care. I have good time management skills and am good at working under pressure, both of which I have demonstrated whilst working at Sweet Marie’s. When setting up events, there would always be tight deadlines at setting up installations and ensuring that the work produced was of a high quality.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
I enjoy building relationships with horses and learning their individual traits. I find working with horses very rewarding, especially when such hard work has gone into producing and looking after them.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I would like to improve my skills in turning out horses for competition, plaiting and clipping. I would also like to improve my general knowledge of the competitive equestrian industry. If I had the opportunity, I would also like to improve my riding. I am particularly interested in dressage.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I am a very patient person, which I believe is very important when working with horses. I am good at adapting and solving problems when things do not go to plan. I am very hard-working, conscientious and am very willing to learn.
