Experience with Horses

Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.

I have many years of hands-on experience working with a wide range of horses, from heavy breeds such as Shires through to fit competition horses. My background includes working on both hunt and show jumping yards, as well as with Cumbrian Heavy Horses, where I was the lead rider responsible for taking clients out on beach and fell rides. Thornberry Animal sanctuary where I am currently carrying for equine with various backgrounds from neglect to people just unable to afford to keep them anymore, here we rehab horses back to Heath back/ breaking and the main aim is to find them the perfect home.

I have also worked as a mounted groom for West Yorkshire Police, where I maintained the highest standards of horse welfare and care. In this role, I was involved in the training and exercising of police horses, ensuring they were fit, responsive, and well-prepared for duty.

In terms of qualifications, I hold my BHS Stage 3 Ride (flat and jump) and a Level 3 Equine First Aid certificate, supporting both my practical skills and my ability to manage horse welfare in a professional setting.

Alongside my professional experience, I have a strong personal competition background. I have successfully shown horses up to county level and competed in show jumping up to 1.25m. I currently have two event horses competing, with ambitions to progress further through the levels.

As a freelancer, I offer a range of services including riding (flatwork, schooling, and jumping), exercising fit competition horses, bringing on young or less experienced horses, and general yard support. I am confident working independently or as part of a team and always prioritise horse welfare, consistency, and professionalism in every role I undertake.

Jobs:

  1. Groom / Rider – Hunt & Show Jumping Yards freelance business since 2022.
Worked with competition horses in busy yard settings. Responsible for daily care, exercise, and
preparation of horses. I set it up as I really enjoying helping people with what the struggling. This could be there just need someone to help school there horse a little better or there are having problems with a tricky horses or youngsters. I love sharing what I know to help others and help horses so the horse and rider can then work together to form a stronger team. In my freelance business I helped work on hunt yard keeping them fit ready for the hunt season and also getting them ready and smart for a days hunting. Showjumping I have groomed at stay away shows helping people warm up getting horses ready for classes ect and keeping the horses fit at home.
  2. Mounted Groom – West Yorkshire Police July 2022 and just left in feb 2024
Maintained high welfare standards. Groomed, cared for, and exercised police horses. REASON FOR LEAVING:I wanted to work more with competition horses and expend my knockledge in the wider competition world.
  3. Lead Rider – Cumbrian Heavy Horses. June 2020 and I left in feb 2022
Led rides across beaches and fells, ensuring safety of riders and horses. Managed and rode large
horses and delivered excellent customer experiences. REASON FOR LEAVING: far away from home and commitments at home were increasing

Key Skills

What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc

I am particularly strong in both working independently and as part of a team. My experience across busy yards and professional environments, including with West Yorkshire Police, has made me reliable, organised, and confident in taking initiative while also communicating effectively with others.

I am experienced in riding and producing a variety of horses, including fit competition horses and younger or less experienced horses. I am confident in schooling on the flat, jumping, and exercising horses to a high standard, always with a focus on improving way of going and overall performance.

I take pride in my turnout and presentation skills, including plaiting and preparing horses for shows and competitions to a high standard. I am also experienced in general yard duties such as clipping, grooming, and maintaining excellent standards of care and welfare.

Having worked with a wide range of horses, including larger and more challenging types, I am confident handling different temperaments and situations including stallions and young stock. I am calm, patient, and consistent, which allows me to get the best out of each horse.

Overall, my strengths lie in my all-round horsemanship, strong work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to maintaining high standards in both horse care and performance.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

I most enjoy the individuality of each horse. Having worked with a range from Shires to fit competition horses, I’ve learned how important it is to understand each horse’s personality and needs. I find it really rewarding building that trust and seeing how willing horses are to try and please when they feel comfortable. That connection and sense of progress is what I enjoy most about working with them.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

I would love to get more experience in bigger professional yards, learn more ways or training young horses all the way to the top horses.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

What sets me apart is my attention to detail and reliability and my genuine passion for working with horses. I understand how important routine, safety, and horse wellbeing are in this role. I’m also calm, patient, and confident handling different types of horses, and I work well both independently and as part of a team.

I’m committed to learning and improving, and I always aim to contribute positively to the yard and ensure every horse is cared for to the highest standard
