Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I have been working with horses for 6 years and completed my BSc Equine Science and Welfare degree at the University Centre Sparsholt. I am currently a polo groom and have been in a senior role within my current establishment organising the team, feed and farrier schedules. I work with 8 horses on a daily basis including stallion handling but have worked with up to 12 on a solo basis. I work for clients within my job role caring for their horses on a livery package, being a direct contact to clients to maintain feed and care of their horses.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
I can work alone and in a team, I can clip to a basic standard and turnout to a high standard (have been awarded with best playing and best turned out ponies in polo matches). I handle stallions on a daily basis and young horses twice weekly. I assist in riding the younger (5-7 year olds) to get them ready for work/learning polo. I have driven a tractor and towed a trailer as well as frequently driving our 2 horse lorry around the country for matches. I am competent at general yard duties.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
Horses are my passion and seeing them achieve what they were bred or trained for is the biggest honour.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I’d like to improve my general riding, while I am competent at riding through all gates I haven’t had much experience with showjumping or classical training.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
My passion for horses and my degree give me the foundations and knowledge to care for horses with keen details. I have knowledge and experience to deal with lameness assessments and minor injuries, including knowing when a vet is or is not required. I put the ponies first in every aspect and have high standards of all horse care requirements. I work well both independently and as a team.
