Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I have had horses since I was 6 years old and competed a lot at riding club / unaffiliated level as a child and teenager. After working 5 years in hospitality I decided to follow my childhood dream and work with horses, I then spent 3 months in Florida grooming for an Olympic event rider and then on return moved to Leicester and have spent the past 4 seasons on a 5* event yard as head home groom / travelling groom. I have been very fortunate to get some amazing opportunities including a trip overseas to Ireland to event and many International events and stay aways. I take pride in turnout and love to bath/plait/quarter mark etc! I was also very lucky to have been given the ride on an experienced event horse who has taught me the ropes and taken me around 105 British showjumping and 100 eventing. Alongside this I have a lot of experience with young and problem horses and enjoy working hard with these horses as I find it very rewarding.
During my time in my current role, we have had several medical situations such as injury, rehab, colic etc. During these situations I discovered I am very good in a crisis or stressful situation. We have also unfortunately had a few injures and rehabs which I have looked after and assisted with.
Last October my boss had a nasty fall and had a few months off, this meant I took the ride on the horses where I gained many valuable ridden skills. This included, learning 4* dressage movements on an experienced horse, riding a young ex racehorse for viewings and competing a young horse who has confidence issues!
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
My top skills would be turnout and plaiting, I love nothing more than a clean and tidy horse and equipment. I am very confident handling all types of horses. I’d say I’m equally good at working alone and in company. My high organisational skills mean I am particularly good at organising schedules and admin.
I am a huge dog lover so would also be thrilled to provide other pet sitting services. Although relatively inexperienced professional with childcare, I have many children in my life I love spending time with and would also be happy for this to be part of my role!
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
The thing I enjoy most is the reward of working hard and seeing results, whether that be ridden results or simple a happy ( clean ) horse and yard!
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I would like to improve my clipping as that is what I am least experienced / confident in
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I am extremely reliable and punctual. I really put my all into a job and will always be very flexible and willing to help wherever I can.
