Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I started very young with my first pony being a Welsh A, he was nuts but also very cool little pony we started in the gymkhana and did very well, I went onto getting a riding type pony when I got a little older and found the love for showing and dressage we done well and could of gone far according to judges but I don’t come from a family where we could afford to go to far. I got older started on the showing cobs drifted off more towards dressage didn’t really compete but still had lessons. Had my first rescue horse at 14. Whole new world and it was stressful but got through that and now have the horse that owes me nothing and will stay forever she now retired and gave me to most beautiful horse but that’s a bit later on. In the space of 4 – 6 years i had gone through a phase where I had all sorts of rescue horses some went on to being retired pets for pony and some went onto being really nice ridden pony’s. Within all that time still going to school, working , even had my first equine job as a groom and I started re backing my mothers horse. Adhd comes in handy at some point. My mothers horse is the one that opened my eyes to a whole new world again at competeing she jumped, she showed and she dressaged. A complete all rounder and quite a bit bigger to what I was used to, 17.1 medium weight hunter. I learned a lot of patience with her, we competed in all aspects and have rosettes to show for it and absolute journey with her but while working with her I was helping my own mare go through the process of pregnancy I was there through everything and had the joys of watching the baby being born and then the the processes afterwards to now where I have a lovely young homebred ready for competeing life. I have done competeing and grooming at shows for other people , dressage , showing m&m and even being stood in the ring besides the judge themselves stewarding. I’ve worked on a dressage yard where I had to handle stallions, youngsters and normal livery horses. I think that is it, I probably forgotten something but I’ve learned a lot over the years and you can’t just remember it all in the space of 10 minutes. I want to find somewhere small where I can still have to fun of working in a team and the atmosphere but still have to time to learn new things make connections with people and horses without just seeing them as a number
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
I’m a pretty good all rounder but I especially excel in sole working I believe this has come from the fact that I have my horses on a private yard so I have had to only rely on myself. It is good working with others aswell. I’ve had my own homebred and competed youngsters so I’m very confident with handling younger horses. Showing is my absolute favourite I do enjoy dressage aswell but there’s something about showing that I just love. I’ve got own background of showing from working hunter to M&Ms and have always done well.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
I love every aspect of the horses life from mucking out to riding but I do particularly love the competition life. I love the waking up to plait the horse making sure the quarter marks are just right the standing at the ring side with your basket watching the smallest little things to note down to what needs improving. But I do also love the little moments of going to muck out a stable and seeing the horses sleeping, I’ve seen hundreds of times but it still softens me to see calm happy horses.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
Always something I want to improve. I want to better everything from mucking out in the quickest time to understanding more of the horses themselves. I like to learn new things all the time from on the ground liberty work to ride technical skills.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I really driven as a person and my love for the welfare of the horses always trumps all. Im very knowledgeable with in the world and take pride in knowing what I know but also humble enough that I’m willing to learn new ways. I’m love a laugh and a bit of fun around the yard when the moment is right of course.
