Future Requirements
• What would you like to do or gain in your next job?
I would love to be able to gain more experience in my riding and show jumping experience through training and competing at higher level and gain more experience riding young horses as well. I would also love to be able to learn a bit more about being a show groom regarding transport and how competitions work as a show groom in the UK (as transport was not used in Singapore).
• Do you need accommodation?
Yes
• Do you have any special requirements for any animals you wish to bring with you?
I would love to bring a pet and horse in the future but is not a requirement now.
• Do you have any ongoing commitments?
No.
• Do you have any holidays booked that an employer needs to know of?
No.
Experience with Horses
Singapore: In Singapore I use to ride and compete at a Riding School and Livery Yard in Singapore where I use to volunteer exercising a combination of riding school ponies, fit competition horses/ponies and youngsters while also building my competition experience competing at Prelim in Dressage and 90cm in Show Jumping and use to hack out other ponies and horses. I also use to participate in arena party and preparation during show jumping shows. I also use to shadow instructors, riders and grooms learning how to plait and forms of coaching. I also use to help out riders and instructors with trot up preparation for FEI competitions and national dressage/showjumping competitions pre show prep by plaiting, tacking up, grooming and warm up.
UK: In the UK while I was at Hartpury College I was able to partake in work experience at an Olympic Yard called Calcourt Equestrain where I gained valuable experience at a show shadowing their show grooming, shadowing their home groom, performing general yard duties, tacking up, feeding, and shadowing riders while they lunged and rode. Alongside my work experience, while I was at Hartpury college I brought my own horse to compete and train at Hartpury where I competed up to Discovery (1m) and trained up to 110cm in training with a Hartpury coach. I also learnt how to long reining, lunge, clip and bandage through this experience. I regularly competed at Hartpury and also was required to partake in the arena party and warmup arenas at the venue.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
Working alone and in a team, turning out for shows, handling a variety of horses, having good communication skills, reliability, friendliness, arena party/ preparation during show, general yard duties, yard tidyness, tacking up, lunging, long reining, clipping and grooming.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
I enjoy their company and the challenges they present. I enjoy meeting people with the same interests as me and I also enjoy riding as it has been my passion since I was a child.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I feel although I am confident to clip and bandage, I could definitely improve on my technique as well as long reining as all the horses I have handled long reining have been saints.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I believe I am a brilliant addition to someone’s team as even though I am passionate about horses and the sport, this has been such a journey and I see it as my lifelong dream. All I have wished for as a kid was to jump as high as I could and would take any opportunity even abroad to be able to ride and be around horses. I have always had the dream to go to the olympics and represent South Africa but I feel I have a lot of growing to do and experience to gain before that dream comes true. I also have a great sense of humor and always look out for the people and animals around me.
