Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I have been around horses from a young age and have worked on and off at a livery yard for many years, gaining experience with a wide range of horses, owners and day-to-day yard responsibilities. I have helped with the backing and early education of young horses, exercised livery horses and supported owners with handling and behavioural challenges. I really enjoy getting to know each horse as an individual and adapting my approach to suit their temperament, experience and needs.
Alongside my equine experience, I have a strong professional background in administration and business. I completed a two-year rotational graduate scheme at Hargreaves Lansdown, where I supported senior stakeholders, managed competing priorities, produced reports and business documentation, coordinated meetings and developed strong organisational and communication skills. I am therefore also open to administrative, office-based or equestrian business roles, where I could combine my professional skill set with my genuine passion for the equine industry.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
I am particularly good at being reliable, hardworking and adaptable, and I’m comfortable both working independently and as part of a team. I’m calm and patient around animals and have a good eye for noticing when something is unusual or needs attention. I’m also practical and happy to get stuck into physical work, whether that’s yard duties, cleaning, grooming, handling horses or general maintenance.
I’m confident around horses and enjoy building their trust, although I’m always respectful of my own experience level and keen to learn from more experienced people. Outside of equine skills, I’m highly organised, have good attention to detail and take pride in doing jobs properly. I’m also very active and physically fit, so I’m comfortable with the demands of a busy yard.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
I most enjoy the combination of being around horses, working outdoors and having a practical, hands-on role. I love building a bond with horses and learning to understand their individual personalities and needs. I also find it really rewarding knowing that the work I do directly contributes to their care, comfort and wellbeing. I enjoy the variety and physical nature of working with horses, and I like that there is always something new to learn.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I would like to continue improving my practical equine skills and gain more hands-on experience across different aspects of horse care and yard management. Although I have a good foundation from my previous veterinary experience and time around horses, I’m keen to keep learning from more experienced people and develop my confidence and knowledge further. I’m very willing to learn, take feedback on board and get stuck into whatever is needed.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I believe I would bring a strong combination of enthusiasm, reliability, a good work ethic and a genuine passion for horses. My previous veterinary experience has given me a good understanding of animal care and welfare, while my wider work experience has taught me to be organised, responsible and adaptable. I’m not afraid of hard work or getting stuck into practical tasks, and I genuinely enjoy being outdoors and working with my hands. Most importantly, working with horses is something I have always wanted to pursue, so I would bring genuine commitment and enthusiasm to the role, while being keen to learn and develop wherever I can.
