Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I have experience around horses but am particularly keen to develop my skills further. Through my current job on a retirement livery, I have gained skills in general handling and yard maintenance, recognising signs of injury and illness, basic equine first aid, bandaging, and poulticing. I am comfortable learning new practical skills and following instructions, and I understand the importance of calm, safe and consistent handling. I am looking for a role where I can become more confident and experienced with horses through regular hands-on work. Also, I am adept at communicating with team members and horse owners in a professional and trust-worthy manner.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
- Good understanding of animal health and welfare
- Calm and patient when working with animals
- Reliable and willing to learn
- Able to follow instructions and established procedures
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
- Good attention to detail
- Keen to develop practical equine handling and husbandry skills
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
I particularly enjoy the hands-on aspect of working with horses and getting to know individual animals and their different behaviours. Horses are emotionally intelligent beings, and interacting with them and learning how each individual communicates is something I find particularly rewarding. I enjoy building trust with them and developing an understanding of their personalities, behaviours and needs.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I am already confident and capable with general horse handling, but I would like to broaden my experience and develop more specialised skills with working and performance horses. I am particularly keen to learn from experienced professionals, gain exposure to different types of horses and disciplines, and further develop my practical skills within a professional equine environment.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I am genuinely keen to learn and continue developing my skillset. I have a strong interest in equine health and welfare through my studies and would bring a reliable, hardworking, and conscientious approach to any role. I am confident working independently but equally enjoy being part of a team, I am happy to take instruction, ask questions when needed, and get involved with any practical day-to-day work required.
I understand that working with horses also means working closely with owners, colleagues, and other equine professionals. I am approachable, respectful, and confident in my communication with people, and I recognise the importance of listening to owners and respecting the individual needs and routines of their horses. I take pride in being dependable and professional, while remaining open to instruction, feedback, and new ways of working. Above all, I would bring genuine enthusiasm to the role, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to get involved in all aspects of any job.
