Experience with Horses
Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.
I have extensive experience in various sectors of the equestrian industry including in livery yards, riding schools, competition grooming/support and with the RDA in which my role spans from networking, participant support, horse care, competition admin and support at external events. These roles have including teaching clients. in a mainstream riding school setting, support disabled participants both on horseback and in a yard environment, support at shows including warming up, grooming, time management and show booking administration. Full time work and providing cover for livery yards, riding schools and competition yard. Experience competing on multiple horses both my own horses and other privately own horses in showjumping, dressage and eventing however I am no longer looking for a role involving riding specifically but can exercise horses from the ground such as through lunging, free-schooling and dedicated in-hand exercises. Experience with a variety of horse and pony types from “hotter” competition horses to veterans and those with either behavioural or physical conditions.
Key Skills
What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc
I feel confident working with the large majority of horses on the ground including those considered dangerous by other professional. I have talent in organisation skills particularly on the ground management such as at large shows where strict time-keeping is essential and managing entries and qualifiers for upcoming events to ensure all details are included. Similarly I thrive in busy environments including public facing where detail is key and can effectively communicate both in-person and via email/phone with clients and other professions to coordinate when needed. However I also enjoy the rewarding nature of management in smaller settings and support riders with health needs or confidence based issues. I feel I have proven adaptable to multiple job roles in different environments which has been necessary in multiple of the jobs and freelance services I have provided over the years.
Strengths and Weaknesses
• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
My favourite thing about working with horses is the variety and constant new challenges that working with a live animal entails whilst at the end of the day the horses are always there with their individual personalities that bring joy to so many people in different ways and the teamwork/camaraderie that working in an equestrian environment brings.
• Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I’d like to improve on my management skills and progress further into the equestrian world moving into more mental demanding roles that reach more people whilst being able to use my extensive hands-on experience.
• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I have always been passionate about horses ever since I had my first riding lesson and began volunteering at a riding school less than 2 years later before beginning paid employment. I’ve never shied away from the early starts that horses bring and I’m very detail orientated along with my experience of working with children and RDA participants which means I can provide the emotional support and reassurance some people need when riding or competing which shouldn’t be stigmatised. I’ve worked with and had horses with health issues so understand that sometimes the job doesn’t just finish when the days over and that horses are unpredictable thats the nature of working with animals.
