Experience with Horses

Horses have been a part of my life for the past 13 years, giving me extensive experience both through personal ownership and within a professional equestrian environment.

I previously worked on an international showjumping yard as a weekend groom, carrying out day-to-day duties including mucking out, grooming, tacking up, exercising horses, and packing and preparing horses for competitions. I gained experience handling a wide range of horses, including fit sport horses, stallions and youngstock. I was also involved in exercising and maintaining the fitness of competition horses, including horses that went on to compete at the WBFSH World Breeding Championship for Young Horses and the Horse of the Year Show.

I have worked at larger competitions, including the Bolesworth Young Horse Show, as well as events at Aintree, Northcote and Southview, gaining experience caring for and preparing horses within busy competition environments.

The yard also operated a large breeding programme, through which I gained experience handling broodmares and foals and assisted with stallion semen collection and artificial insemination. I have also bred my own foal, giving me first-hand experience of foaling, newborn foal care and handling youngstock. This has included teaching essential early skills such as leading and having their feet handled.

key skills

• Confident handling a range of horses – Experienced handling fit competition horses, stallions, broodmares, foals and youngstock.

• Teamwork – Comfortable working as part of a team within busy yard and competition environments.

• Independent working – Able to take responsibility for tasks and work confidently without constant supervision.

• Working under pressure – Experienced working to strict schedules and maintaining high standards in fast-paced competition environments.

• Time management and organisation – Able to prioritise yard duties and ensure horses and equipment are prepared on time.

• Adaptability and willingness to learn – Although my main experience is within showjumping, I am keen to gain experience in other equestrian disciplines and pick up new skills quickly.

• Attention to detail – Understand the importance of careful observation and maintaining high standards when caring for competition horses, breeding stock and youngstock.

• Reliable and responsible – Comfortable being trusted with the daily care and handling of a variety of horses.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

What I enjoy most about working with horses is being able to watch them grow, develop and achieve their potential. I particularly enjoy working with young horses and seeing them progress from the early stages of their lives, as this makes their later achievements feel even more rewarding. One of my favourite parts of working with horses is also seeing the effect they can have on other people. Whether it is an owner watching their horse achieve something they have worked towards for years, or someone simply enjoying being around them, I love seeing people’s reactions and the happiness these incredible animals can bring. Being able to play even a small part in a horse’s journey and see what they go on to achieve is something I find extremely rewarding.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

Most of my professional experience so far has been within showjumping and breeding, so I would really like the opportunity to broaden my knowledge and gain experience in other equestrian disciplines. I am always keen to improve my practical skills and learn different approaches to horse care, fitness and management. I pick up new information quickly and enjoy learning from more experienced people, so I would be keen to take on new responsibilities and continue developing my skills.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

I can offer employers a combination of practical experience, a strong work ethic and a genuine willingness to learn. Horses have been a part of my life for the past 13 years, and I have also gained professional experience on an international showjumping and breeding yard. This has taught me to work efficiently under pressure, both independently and as part of a team, while always putting the horses’ welfare first. I am confident handling a variety of horses, including fit competition horses, stallions, broodmares, foals and youngstock. Most importantly, I am reliable, hardworking and not afraid of the less glamorous parts of working with horses.
