Experience with Horses

Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.

I completed three years at Duchy College Stoke Climsland doing a Level 2 Technical Certificate in Horse Care and a Level 3 Advanced Extended Technical Diploma in Equine Management.  During my time there I also got my British Horse Society Stage 1 and Ride Safe. In college I was taught about general upkeep of horses and a yard as a whole while also digging into subjects such as anatomy, conformation, behaviour and training.

One of the requirements to complete the course was work experience. I did mine at a local trekking centre for two weeks where I would also spend some of my free time in the holidays helping out. As a part of my work there I helped with turning in and out, grooming, tacking up and getting clients onto their horses along with other general horse management. My last year at college I did my work experience at a ranch in Zimbabwe. Here I helped with the general care of the horses in between going out, into the bush, under saddle almost daily.

This last summer I spent three months in America working at a Summer Camp as Riding Director. I was in charge of 21 horses, 4 sheep, 3 goats, 20 chickens and 2 pigs. I had 2 Stable Managers under my watch who helped me with the general upkeep of the yard. There were also 12 riding instructors who I supervised. We all worked hard together to make sure the kids that came to camp have the best and safest time they could have.

In the couple months before going to America I put compensation towards being part of a horse ride and care group. For this I would go to the yard multiple times a week to bring in the horses, groom, ride and then finish any care tasks that were necessary.

Key Skills

What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc

  • I can work alone or with others, whatever is required of me.
  • I have been taught how to clip and plait along with overall show turnout but I have only limited experience in these areas.
  • I have handled, ridden and been taught to train a variation of horses through a range of groundwork, lungeing, long reining and ridden work.
  • I was also taught equine first aid and had to use many of the things I learnt during my time as Riding Director.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

I love how intelligent and beautiful they are. Any time I am around them I feel a sense of ease and happiness. They are hard work but it is worth every moment.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

I would like to continue improving my communication and leadership skills.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

I have a range of unique experiences, they show my resilience and ability to exist out of my comfort zone. I am willing to learn and take on any challenges head on. I always want what is best for the animals and will do my best to get it.
