Experience with Horses
I’m an enthusiastic and hard working individual with many years of experience dealing with a variety of horses and atmospheres, from riding school through to competition. I have been working full time in the equine industry for the past year, however have around 10 years experience with horses, from lessons, volunteering, college and also ownership. Previously I have competed in a variety of dressage, showing and eventing and have also played a groom’s role at these events so am used to plaiting and general turnout. I always take great pride in my work and my real passion for horses always helps me work hard to ensure they are kept to the highest of standard, whether it be in the stable, field or competition, both care and turnout wise.
I have completed my level 3 Extended Diploma in Horse Management and have also done my BHS Progressive Riding Test. More recently I was working towards taking some lessons at a riding school, gaining experience and tips of teaching, with the hopes to help give me skills to further down the line take more BHS exams.
In terms of exercise, I have a lot of experience with lunging and am comfortable and knowledgeable on many of the training aids. Riding wise, I am a quiet rider who always rides with a sympathetic approach, always trying to achieve the best out of whatever horse I am riding.
I have ridden and handled a wide variety of horses, from your riding school ponies to ex racers and competition horses, approaching each horse as an individual for the best results.
Along with this, I have experience with sole charge, working mainly alone for most of my week, dealing with not only the care of the horses but also liasing with owners, helping to solve and sort problems by providing advice, contacts and being the middle man between owner and yard manager.
Key Skills
Team work – happy to work in a team and can adapt to take on both a leadership and team player role dependent on situation.
Responsible – put in charge of running a yard for periods of staff holiday.
Sympathetic – able to adapt and change to suit the situation with the correct level of care, attention and reaction.
Hard working – always looking for extra work, efficiency and effectively working through tasks to a high and professional standard.
Strengths and Weaknesses
- What do you most enjoy about working with horses?
I most enjoy the variety that comes with working with horses, the challenges you face and how no two days are the same. Horses are not just a source of income to me, I live and breathe them and pride this as my “make a difference” skill.
- Is there anything you’d like to improve?
I would like to improve my experience of working with a variety of horses and enhance my experince working in a head grooms role on a busier higher level yard.
- Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?
I’m a passionate and hard working individual and will turn my hand to any task. I have proven myself to be a fundemental team member, improving the whole running of a yard both day to day and long term, building strong relationships with liveries and being trusted to keep the yard running during the managers time off.
Requirements
- What would you like to do or gain in your next job?
I would like to be able to be in a position where I would have the opportunity to gain new skills, improve my current skill set and also have the ability to progress as a head groom.
- Do you need accommodation?
Unless based within a relative distance to home, I would be looking for accommodation for me and my partner.
