Since October I have worked as a freelance- building up a frequent clientele ranging from high level showing yards, national hunt racing yards and private clients for schooling and turning out horses to a high level. Alongside this I produce ROR’s ready for careers as hunt horses and eventers, slowly building their skill profiles and matching them with the correct and suitable homes.
March 2021- September 2023
I worked at a variety of equestrian facilities ranging from basic horse livery yards to topflight national hunt racing yards and racehorse rehabilitation facilities to gain work experience and help pay my way through college and university.
Over the past 2- 3 seasons I have been challenged with many different tasks, ranging from mucking out, general yard work, putting horses on and off the walker as well as exercising. Due to mainly working in the racing industry, I have learnt how to ride work to a good standard and follow trainers’ instructions well.
However, during my time working in rehabilitation, I focused a lot on schooling horses on the flat to regain muscle and for them to be able to balance and support themselves before going back on the gallops. This wasn’t just racehorses but also sport horses. During my time here, I learnt a lot about breaking in different types of horses, starting with the fundamental groundwork, all the way through to being ridden under saddle. I had many opportunities to practice my schooling over fences, both hurdles and chase fences, as well as educating the younger horses in an arena over poles for the first time.
