Experience with Horses

Outline your experience with horses here/the scope of your freelance services. If you’re looking for a non-equine or non- yard-based job please use this space to describe your experience skills/abilities and adapt the questions to suit your line of work.

I have ridden since I was a very small child and worked my way through PC exams and was a part of the showjumping team. Worked very hard at school to get the GCSE’s I did and was counting riding throughout this time. I then went to college and studied horse management at Brooksby Melton college which was very intensive with teaching about nutrition, horse physiology and all other aspects of horse knowledge as well as riding. Whilst here I was on the riding team as well as the equine representative for student council. Along side this course I was working at a hunt yard and once the course had finished I stayed on. I then decided I wanted to go into stud work and worked a few hours at a small local stud before going onto be a groom for event rider Flora Young which I did until I completed my diploma course at The National Stud. I really enjoyed the course and that sparked my passion in breeding, so after the course I did yearling prep at Newsells and then started full time at Juddmonte and stayed for two years and during this time also did yearling prep for Hazelwood Bloodstock. I then decided I wanted to learn more about the medical side of racing so I am currently working at NEH. Whilst I’ve been here I’ve also been taking courses to further my employability, some of these include The Racing Secretary course at the BHS, online courses in Microsoft and Excel and I have also booked to do the Stud Secretary course at The National Stud. Early this year I also took on a friends young ex-racehorse as she has moved to Australia, this has been a very rewarding process and I’m very lucky to have been trusted with him.

Key Skills

What are you particularly good at? For example: working alone, working with others, clipping, plaiting, turning out for shows, handling stallions, handling/riding young horses, non-equine skills etc

i am happy working alone or in a team. I’m extremely organised and punctual, and whenever there is a quieter moment I always look for another job to do. Happy clipping, plaiting, turning out to high standard due to my work in hunting and eventing yards. Very confident with a range of different horses from young, to big fit horses, foals, broodmares, yearlings and also stallions. I am a great communicator and can conduct myself in a professional manner no matter how stressful a situation. I always go above and beyond what is asked of me and I will always be the first person on the yard and the last to leave. I believe that the care of horses that you work with should be above all else. Although I love riding I would not turn down a job if they did not offer it and I am hoping to get into more of an office based role such as a racing secretary.

Strengths and Weaknesses

• What do you most enjoy about working with horses?

I love building a bond with them and being able to see them grow and develop into brilliant horses.

• Is there anything you’d like to improve?

I would like to do more courses to help my office knowledge and make me more employable.

• Why should employers consider you above any other job seeker?

I would be an asset to any yard as I am a very hard worker, a pleasant person to have around and I’m not afraid to ask questions to ensure I do everything as they would like. I am very passionate about this industry and would like now to find a job and stay there, to work my way up and be a real driving force in the team. I also ensure I play no part in “yard politics” which I think is a hard quality to find in our industry.

Requirements

• What would you like to do or gain in your next job?

I adored stud work and would like to do that again. Preferably an office job but I am still young so would like to experience as much of the industry as I can before moving onto that.

• Do you need accommodation?

No I have a house with my boyfriend.

• Do you have any special requirements for any animals you wish to bring with you?

I do have a well trained spaniel but this is not a must I can be flexible.

• Do you have any ongoing commitments?

I do have a horse but again I can be flexible.

• Do you have any holidays booked that an employer needs to know of?

No. I am also happy to work Christmas.
