Job Description

A fantastic opportunity to join a newly established Thoroughbred stud farm in Limerick, specialising in the breeding and development of yearlings for our own racing operation. Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced, motivated, and hands-on Stud Farm Manager to oversee the daily operations of a Thoroughbred breeding farm. Reporting directly to the Owners, you will be responsible for the overall management of the stud, ensuring excellence in horse welfare, breeding success, staff leadership, and farm operations.


Key Responsibilities

A. Breeding & Foaling Management

  • Oversee all aspects of the Thoroughbred breeding programme, including teasing, natural covering, scanning, and foaling.

  • Work closely with reproductive veterinarians to optimise conception and foaling rates.

  • Supervise foaling operations, ensuring expert care for mares and foals before, during, and after birth.

  • Manage stallion handling, teasing procedures, and covering schedules in line with industry regulations.

  • Maintain accurate records of coverings, pregnancies, foalings, and progeny outcomes.

B. Horse Care & Youngstock Development

  • Ensure the welfare and health of all horses, including mares, foals, yearlings, and stallions, are maintained to the highest standards.

  • Oversee daily routines such as feeding, turnout, grooming, and health monitoring.

  • Coordinate veterinary, farrier, and nutrition programmes.

  • Manage weaning, handling, and early education of foals and yearlings.

  • Supervise preparation of foals and yearlings for sale when required.

C. Farm Operations & Maintenance

  • Oversee upkeep of paddocks, fencing, stabling, and farm equipment.

  • Implement pasture and land management plans, including reseeding, fertilising, weed control, and drainage.

  • Manage feed and bedding procurement.

  • Supervise farm repairs and infrastructure improvements.

  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and biosecurity protocols.

D. Staff Management & Leadership

  • Lead, train, and motivate a team of grooms, foaling staff, and seasonal workers.

  • Create staff rotas and ensure effective delegation of tasks.

  • Foster a professional, positive, and safe working environment.

E. Administration & Communication

  • Maintain breeding, veterinary, and stock records using digital stud management systems.

  • Manage budgets, ordering of supplies, and operational costs.

  • Communicate professionally with owners, veterinarians, and industry contacts.

  • Provide regular reports on breeding progress and stock performance.
