Equine Careers

Equine careers information and advice for job seekers

The National Minimum Wage and Living Wage

In April every year, at the end of one Tax Year and the start of the next, the National Minimum Wage and Living Wage increases. This is important for everyone in the equine industry – employers and employees alike. Equestrianism is a notoriously low-pay industry in terms of hourly salary, and salaries are frequently, if not always, topped up with extras, bonuses and tidbits. But in reality, how lawful are we in doing this without the advice and guidance of accountants and tax specialists? And what are the consequences of getting it wrong? Here we attempt to put a complex matter into as simple terms as possible, regarding the provision of accommodation with a job, based on situations regularly seen within the equine industry.

I read with interest that about 70% of us make New Year’s resolutions, but less than 8% will be kept beyond February/March! It’s not surprising to learn that the top resolutions will include things like losing weight, quitting smoking, managing debt etc. but, also importantly, resolutions focussing on careers and job choices are right up there too.

Full time, permanent position sole charge position available for a newly created post. A live-in or live-out person required for this lovely family yard at this 100-acre estate. This role would suit an experienced, reliable horse person who is used to working independently and can be flexible to the requirements of the role as it evolves. A desire to ‘make it your own’ is ideal. To begin with, the role will be quiet, with just 3 horses and an 8-month-old foal but everything must be done to a good standard and with care and attention to detail. High levels of yard/stable and horse management are essential. The yard owner is a non-competing Show-jumping enthusiast who knows the sport to a high level. He is often abroad but his family is often at his estate. Currently, they own a very talented SJ gelding, a mare, and a foal who will be produced very carefully and professionally for the future. The mare will foal once more before she returns to work. The gelding is 17+HH, 10 years old, and most certainly a performance horse who can be lively, so you must be used to handling sport horses and youngstock.  Currently in training with local professional Show Jumpers and they will be competing him up to 1.50m and beyond. You will need to be prepared to transport the horse to facilitate this training and possibly to the odd competition. The owner likes to school on the other days when he is around to keep the horse ‘ticking over’ on the flat and some jumping but when he is not around or being trained locally, this will fall to you (minus the jumping). Currently, the horse is lunged every day in the morning and then ridden in the afternoon. You will need to be confident enough to exercise the horse and similarly keep him ‘ticking over’ with lunging, flatwork & hacking. There is currently stable capacity for 4 horses at the property and there are plans to reach this number over time and possibly, to build more. There are 3 children in the family (18,16 &12) all away at boarding school. They may want to ride more in time, so you would need to be encouraging and helpful to them at this time. Other duties may include (but are not limited to) Dog care friendly (family dogs Rhodesian Ridgeback/Cocker spaniel), gardening, general errands as & when required. There will be some paddock/menage/stable maintenance duties as part of this role but you will need to be a self-starter and build the role over time as there are plans afoot for the role to become busier and very interesting! Lorry driver 3.5 or 7.5t or trailer driver essential. Good facilities including a large menage.
