The National Minimum Wage and Living Wage

In April every year, at the end of one Tax Year and the start of the next, the National Minimum Wage and Living Wage increases. This is important for everyone in the equine industry – employers and employees alike. Equestrianism is a notoriously low-pay industry in terms of hourly salary, and salaries are frequently, if not always, topped up with extras, bonuses and tidbits. But in reality, how lawful are we in doing this without the advice and guidance of accountants and tax specialists? And what are the consequences of getting it wrong? The UK Government has strict laws regarding the minimum sum of money any individual can receive in return for work done and it can be confusing at least, a minefield at worst, when remunerating staff not just fairly, but legally too.  In this article, we take a timely look, and research answers to basic questions for both employers and employees regarding the National Minimum Wage and Living Wage and to highlight common misconceptions within the equine industry regarding wages, remuneration packages and the law.

Equine Jobs with Accommodation

Pre-Employment Checks – References

As we all know, recruitment is an inexact science and pre-employment checks such as securing valid and recent references gives us important information that helps us to decide if a candidate is suitable for a particular role.

Over the years I have taken references on behalf of thousands of employers and prospective employees as part of delivering bespoke recruitment services. This has lead me to have many positive, long-term placements and via the same established processes of due diligence, I have also diverted my clients away from certain disaster on more than one occasion!

Interestingly these days many grooms, having known me through their careers, give me as a reference to their ‘journey.’  Similarly, and not infrequently, employers will ask me for information about a particular prospective employee and of course, where I can fairly and legally comment, I do.

Over the years, more especially in the equestrian recruitment environment, I have been struck by how many employers who recruit for themselves or via other routes don’t seem to bother taking up references, opting instead to completely ignore these critical pre-employment checks just hoping for the best; many seem to live to regret this omission sooner or later…

Job Description This role is working in a competition livery yard run by a BS Accredited Coach.  The job involves all normal stable duties, the exercise of competition horses and travel to shows. You must have: worked in the industry already, have practical knowledge of stable management, horse health and the ability to ride fit powerful horses competently, hacking or in the school. Most horses are 16 -16.1 so we require a lighter weight person at this time. It would be a good role for someone who has finished an apprenticeship and is looking for their first ‘proper’ job.  Equally, we would welcome someone more experienced. Somebody who showjumped would also benefit from the opportunity of having their own horse on the yard, training and going to shows with us. You should: be happy to work within a team in a structured environment, prepared to work efficiently with safety in mind, like things to be organised, clean and tidy with attention to detail, have a keen interest in the training of horses both ridden and on the ground. Our horses are treated as individuals and all our grooms must have their welfare at heart and be prepared to work with a level of detail when caring for the horses. Job Description Seeking a part time groom for a beautiful private yard just outside of henley on thames, working alongside one other taking care of 8 horses and ponies, ranging from retired ponies to show jumpers. The job will consist of mainly yard work and sometimes having to take sole charge. The role will involve all general yard duties from turning out, bringing in and mucking out ensuring horses are cared for to a high standard, groomed and bathed when required and the yard kept clean and tidy. The job will suit someone looking for a lovely working environment and is happy to work as a team and also happy to undertake tasks alone when required. This yard is a large but friendly, family-run establishment with around 50 horses in work at any one time and also foals, youngstock, mares and stallions. Successful candidates will ideally have an HGV license or at least a willingness to get this done quickly and must have experience transporting horses at home and ideally, (but not essentially),  abroad. They have very strict policies on sticking within legal driving time limits so sufficient support is always available to facilitate this whilst traveling. The yard has 3 large lorries and several tours can be going on simultaneously on occasions, sometimes with 12 weeks away e.g.: in Dubai/Global tours so candidates will need to love the pace and lifestyle. Candidates will need experience of top-level show jumping, ideally gained in a recent role or at least have high level, competition experience gained in a similar fast-paced discipline e.g.: eventing Candidates should be able to turn out to the highest standards for Show Jumping, understand horse management at the level (home and away), be reliable, punctual etc. Candidates will need to be self-sufficient and capable of sole charge but also able to be team players with the ability to communicate with Riders, fellow Team members and juniors on the yard alike.
